Choosing a good cooler at a value price is not always easy. Do you go for the most popular brand, Yeti Tundra and just spend the extra money, or do you take a chance on a less expensive brand like Grizzly Coolers? Which one holds more or keeps ice cold longer? These are important questions and there are a few others just as important to picking the right ice chest. I’m going to share with you what makes each a little unique so you can decide which one fits your unique situation.
There are a few high end coolers out there worth mentioning here but when it comes to getting it done in the outdoors, no name is better recognized than Yeti Tundra. However, that Yeti name comes with a steep price tag. We’re here to discover in our Grizzly Cooler vs Yeti Tundra Comparison if there are performance and quality features strong enough to convince you to save a couple hundred dollars on a Grizzly.

Grizzly Coolers vs Yeti Tundra Performance
When it comes to a coolers performance there are a lot of things to consider. The most obvious one is knowing about how long it will hold ice. [toc]Grizzly has performance tested each of their coolers in a controlled test. They fill the cooler with cans and ice and test it in a 90 degree environment opening the cooler twice each day to simulate getting into it for food transfer.
I was amazed that the monster Grizzly 400-quart Hunting Ice Box will actually hold ice for over 19 days when properly loaded. You can see the actual Grizzly Cooler ice test results here. I have no doubt that Yeti coolers will keep ice as well when properly loaded but they do not offer a verifiable test for every size Tundra cooler they offer. I’m not confident in the results of some of the online ice challenge reviews I’ve seen because they only test a few size models.
About Grizzly Coolers
Grizzly coolers are all made in the USA and that’s a fact they are quite proud of. In fact the Roto Tough design is something Grizzly’s parent company Iowa Rotocast Plastics or IRP has been doing for decades. Ever notice those blue or red plastic stands they sell your Bud Light and Budweiser from at every event? Those are made by the same people who make every Grizzly Cooler.
So why consider buying a new Grizzly Cooler today? Would features like an extra wide 2″ hold down slot on each end of every cooler give you piece of mind when locking your cooler down for the rough ride in your boat or side-by-side? How about a 2″ wide mouth torrent drain plug that is fed by a built-in drain groove in the floor of every cooler? Makes cleanup after use go a lot faster.
Would knowing that if you ever have a problem your cooler has a Lifetime Warranty make a difference to you? When you’re spending this much on a cooler you expect it to last. I’ve always figured that a company puts a warranty on their product based on how long they think it will last, or at least for how long they’re willing to stand behind it. Do you want to read more about the Grizzly Cooler Lifetime Warranty?
Every Grizzly Cooler model number represents the actual unit size in quarts capacity. This can be valuable when deciding which size cooler to buy since its more accurate than a model number that might be higher than the actual capacity.
About Yeti Tundra Coolers
There’s no question, Yeti Tundra is a name synonymous with high end quality coolers. There are many people who will just pay the extra money for that brand name recognition. But what extra value can you really expect when you buy a new Yeti Tundra Cooler? Their grizzly tested expedition grade coolers are made of the highest quality products on the market.
From their T-REX™ Lid Latches to the COLDLOCK™ GASKET system every detail of a Yeti cooler screams attention to detail. The fact is, you can’t buy a better built cooler today. That’s not to say you can’t buy one as well built though.
I mentioned above that Yeti builds their coolers in the USA as well as in the Philippines and that every Yeti cooler is backed by a 5 year warranty. What I didn’t mention is that thousands of people have trusted the Yeti name for years and those same people will only recommend Yeti to their friends. If you are set on owning the cooler with the most consumer quality ratings then you’ll want to check out all the Yeti Cooler Options.
Conclusion: Which One is Right for You Grizzly or Yeti
Feature for feature, you will be hard pressed to pick one over the other based on any specific features. They are just that close in comparison. Wish I could give you a legitimate one is better than the other, but the fact is they are both great quality coolers. In fact they are the two best overall from all my research.
So how do you decide which one is right for you? I think there are 3 considerations that will narrow your search down to the one right choice and I’m going to detail them in order based on a process of elimination to help you break down how you find your best match.
Price vs Value
- To get to the bottom of this decision you are going to have to decide if you are willing to pay the extra cost (between 20%-40%) to own an original Yeti Tundra cooler. Let’s face it, at the time I wrote this article a tan Grizzly 40 with a true 40 quart capacity costs $150 less than a Yeti Tundra 45 with the same actual 40 quart capacity. The pricing details are about the same all the way through every size option.
- I mentioned above the difference in true size options in the model numbers of the Grizzly cooler line. But no matter which product line you chose, you will need to decide which size cooler will best fit your most frequent use. This is because both these cooler brands perform at their best when fully loaded. So buying a 75 quart cooler and regularly filling only half way will lead to disappointment because the ice will melt quicker. You can read how to keep your cooler colder here. Check all Grizzly Cooler Sizes or Yeti Cooler Sizes to decide.
- That’s right, once you’ve decided on a brand and a size you will have color options to chose from. I think it’s important to leave this decision to the end because there are so many things you can do with your new cooler once you’ve decided the right one. Both brands offer special addition models like [easyazon_link identifier=”B015EMGHR8″ locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”reviewsright-20″]Grizzly’s ODGreen Real Tree Xtra 75 Quart cooler[/easyazon_link] or you can even customize your new cooler with a choice of over 30 styles of custom Yeti or Grizzly Cooler Graphics after you’ve bought your new cooler. You will also have options for accessories and cooler parts once you’ve picked the right cooler.

If you follow this 3 step process you are bound to pick a winner. No matter which direction your final choice takes you, rest assured that you have decided between two of the highest quality cooler on the market today. You will be able to look forward to years of dependable cooler performance.
